På Diamyd Medical arbetar man med att utveckla ett diabetesvaccin som ska göra typ 1-diabetiker toleranta mot det kroppsegna proteinet GAD. Genom att vänja kroppen vid GAD hoppas man kunna stoppa den process som bryter ner de celler som producerar insulin och på så vis stoppa sjukdomsförloppet vid typ 1-diabetes.
- Det finns två sätt att gå tillväga när man ska göra kroppen tolerant mot något. Det ena kallas för högdostolerans och innebär att man överdoserar ämnet man är allergisk mot tills immunförsvaret inte orkar mer. Det andra sättet är lågdostolerans, då man ger kroppen otroligt små mängder av ämnet upprepade gånger tills kroppen vänjer sig, och det är det vi gör med GAD, förklarar Diamyd Medicals vd Elisabeth Lindner.

Elisabeth Lindner, VD för Diamyd Medical AB, har utsetts till 2010 års Biotech Builder. Det är åttonde året, varav andra året i Sverige, som Biotech Builders genom priset uppmärksammar en framgångsrik person i branschen. Priset delades ut igår vid Biotech Builders årliga möte som hölls i Stockholm.
Juryns motivering:
” Tillsammans med sina medarbetare har Elisabeth, i en liten organisation, under 3 år tagit Diamyd från ett bolagsvärde på ca 700 MSEK till dagens imponerande 3300 MSEK. Efter ett kvarts sekel börjar den svenska biotekniksektorn nu skörda frukterna av ett idogt forskningsarbete.
Strax innan sommaren tecknade Diamyd ett av de största licensavtalen någonsin kring sitt diabetesvaccin med samma namn. Om de pågående studierna faller väl ut, vilket visar sig först nästa år, kommer estetikbolaget Q-Med äntligen kunna få efterlängtat sällskap som svensk framgångssaga.
Men redan i höst kommer en rad andra pusselbitar att falla på plats i sektorn.

Diamyd had intensive traffic at its booth during all three exhibition days at the AADE 37th Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. Many diabetes educators and other health care professionals in the diabetes field visited Diamyd’s booth to learn more about the ongoing US Phase III study DiaPrevent and the diabetes vaccine.
During the third day of the conference, the medical journalist Dan Hurley visited Diamyd’s booth and signed his new book “Diabetes Rising: How a rare disease became a modern pandemic, and what to do about it”. The book examines why both types of the disease are now 10 to 20 times more common than a hundred years ago, despite all the "breakthroughs" and medications, and innovative new strategies aimed at turning the tide. Dan Hurley is an award-winning medical journalist who has lived with type I diabetes for over 30 yrs. and who regularly contributes to the NY Times and writes for many well known U.S. publications.

Immunologic data from Diamyd’s Phase II study in children and adolescents recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes have been published on-line in Clinical Immunology (Article in Press, Corrected Proof).
The title of the paper is “GAD-alum treatment in patients with type 1 diabetes and the subsequent effect on GADA IgG subclass distribution, GAD65 enzyme activity and humoral response”.

" The company’s third-quarter report contained no surprises. Costs were slightly higher than our estimates, but have very little effect overall. The company is in a very good financial position following the agreement with Johnson & Johnson. A number of competitors at a late stage of development within the indication have recently begun additional studies, giving the company a couple of years’ head-start. Strengthened finances, a partner in place and a continued strong news flow suggest the shares will remain strong. We believe that the valuation is attractive with the potential for continued increases ahead of the study results due in the second quarter next year."
